Celebrating World Bicycle Day

Join us for a gathering of bicycle fun in Khayelitsha
World Bicycle Day
Start Date
Sunday, June 3, 2018 - 12:00
End Date
Sunday, June 3, 2018 - 15:00
Venue
Isivivana Centre, 8 Mzala Street & Julius Tsholo Street, Khayelitsha

To celebrate World Bicycle Day 2018, join Cape Town Bicycle Mayor, Lebogang Mokwena, and partners - Bicycling Empowerment Network, Pedal Power Association and Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy - for a day of awareness-raising and collaborative learning:

  • Sharing stories
  • Meeting new bicycle friends
  • Hearing from speakers, including Sipho Mona (Velokhaya), Sizwe Nzima (Iyeza Express - a bicycle courier service company in Khayelitsha) and Lebogang Mokwena (Learn2Cycle)
  • Learning to ride a bicycle
  • Going on a group ride

Building on a similar discussion which took place on 21 April 2018, we'll aim to understand some of the challenges to cycling in Khayelitsha specifically, and to explore what can be done to promote commuter cycling in townships more broadly. The discussion will be framed by the historical context of cycling in South Africa and globally but will focus on the lived experience of individuals in Khayelitsha today.

The announcement by the United Nations designating June 3rd as the official World Bicycle Day marks an important milestone for bicycle advocacy internationally. Acknowledging the multiple societal and environmental benefits of using the bicycle for transport, leisure, and social development, this UN Resolution strengthens global and country-specific cycling initiatives.
