FAQ:

What is an Open Streets Day?
An Open Streets Day is an opportunity for all to explore a street as a space that connects people. It suspends reality for a few hours and shows a glimpse of what our future could be. Rather than being an event, Open Streets is simply a day to re-imagine public life and use our streets differently.

How much does it cost?
It's free.

Who funds Open Streets Days?
This series is possible thanks to the support of Transport for Cape Town, the Millennium Trust and Woolworths.

How will I get there?
We encourage you to use public transport, car-pool or your own steam to get to an Open Streets Day. Take a train or minibus taxi, use MyCiTi, or simply walk, skate or cycle. The whole point is to experience the city without a private motor vehicle.

Join the Plainsman BikeBus and cycle in a fun group ride 22km across Cape Town to get to Open Streets Mitchells Plain.

What do I bring?
Comfortable shoes, sunscreen, water, bike, skateboard, your family and all your friends.

What if it rains?
Come rain or shine; Open Streets will carry on. Bring an umbrella if you don't want to get wet.

How can I participate?
COME ALONG ON THE DAY!

BRING AN ACTIVITY - You could host anything from a yoga class to a street soccer match; give live drawing demonstrations or hold a poetry reading. Email info@openstreets.co.za with your idea. The 'rules':

  • Activities should be interactive & fun
  • Activities must be free to the public
  • Respect others, share the space
  • The street must be kept free for mobility. Static activities to be on the pavement or in parking bays
  • No marketing
  • No motorised vehicles
  • No alcohol or fires
  • No stages/structures
  • Music to be kept at a reasonable volume

VOLUNTEER ON THE DAY - Help us ensure the day runs smoothly as well as having fun and meeting new people. From helping with traffic management to surveying participants; this is a practical way to contribute to the day and learn some skills. A mandatory training session will take place before the day. To sign up, fill in the volunteer sign up form.

APPLY TO BE A VENDOR - Open Streets is not a market, but there is an opportunity for food vendors who are registered with the City of Cape Town to have a spot. To apply, send us an email with your contact details, the type of food you will be selling and your official Certificate of Acceptability. Those who are not yet registered still have time to get a temporary certificate from the Environmental Health Department.

SPREAD THE WORD - Open Streets depends on everyone to get the word out and make it a vibrant and fun day. Join the Facebook event page and invite all your friends and family to join you.
