WHAT IS OPEN STREETS?
Open Streets Woodstock builds on a local programme inspired by Colombia’s Ciclovía. The concept is to close down a street temporarily so that it becomes car-free. It’s a chance for people to reclaim streets as public space, for walking, cycling, skating, playing, exploring and general socialising. Open Streets suspends reality and allows us to imagine a new “normal” for our streets. Watch a short video here:https://youtu.be/-IL2iv4Kkws
WHO ORGANISES IT?
Open Streets Cape Town, a citizen-driven NPO, with the support of Millennium Trust, as well as the help of many volunteers, Woodstock residents, collaborators and friends!
WHY?
To create shared spaces that can help bridge social and spatial divides in Cape Town, and encourage people to think differently about how we move around the city. Open Streets Days bring people together to experience streets as places of connection and belonging, breaking down social barriers and building a sense of community; ultimately helping create a connected, safe, and inclusive city.
RULES OF ENGAGEMENT
- Activities must be free to the public (it’s a non-commercial, car-free community day - not a festival or event)
- Please share the space with those around you; be friendly and respect others, there are no exact demarcations of activity spots (we map registered activities roughly)
- All activity organisers take responsibility for their own setup and sourcing electricity if needed
- No large infrastructure (stages, scaffolding etc.) unless it has been approved beforehand in writing by the Safety Office (ask us if you’re unsure)
- Street must be kept clear for mobility; any infrastructure to be on the pavement or in parking bays
- No vehicles parked along the Open Streets route
- Music must be kept at a reasonable volume - please keep in mind the surrounding neighbours!
- No alcohol may be consumed or sold on the street (only inside licensed establishments - there are no special provisions, normal rules apply)
- No open fires
- No blatant marketing (walking around handing out fliers or other brand collateral, brand activations or big banners)
