Open Streets returns to Bellville on Sunday 25 November. Between 09h00 and 14h00 on that day, a portion of Voortrekker Road will be closed to vehicles and open to people who can enjoy a car-free space, by foot, bicycle, skateboard or any other form of non-motorised transport. Other activities for all participants include street games and sport, live music and dance cyphers, arts and crafts, skateboarding and cycling activations for kids and food stalls. Open Streets Bellville is free to attend and everyone is welcome to participate.
Executive Mayor Dan Plato will formally open the collaborative community day. He will be joined by a few other surprise special guests throughout the day.
This will be the third Open Streets Day to take place in Bellville. It is supported by City of Cape Town, the Greater Tygerberg Partnership, Voortrekker Road Corridor Improvement District and the GIZ Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative.
“Open Streets is an opportunity to showcase the diverse and rich culture of Bellville. We are working to build an inclusive, connected community in a vibrant, liveable urban centre where everyone is welcome. We welcome the opportunity to join forces with Open Streets, and invite residents and like-minded individuals and groups in the area to enjoy everything the day has to offer.” says Warren Hewitt, CEO of GTP
“Open Streets in Bellville offers a great opportunity for Cape Town’s residents to be active participants in experiencing the unifying potential of their community. On 25 November, we will all be able to experience what an inclusive, safe and welcoming city looks like by inviting people to reimagine their space, get to know their neighbours, and carry this fun and thought-provoking experience forward,” said Executive Mayor Dan Plato.
“Open Streets has been a positive platform for the many different communities who inhabit Bellville to come together and share streets as public space” says Abdullahi Ali Hassan, who sits on the advisory council of the GTP.
Councillor Rose Rau, chairperson of Subcouncil 6 says “Bellville is a key development area for the City of Cape Town in general and Voortrekker Road in particular. The Bellville CBD and Voortrekker Road area will reflect significant changes and developments over time which will embrace our current Transit Oriented Development Policy. Open Streets is an exciting way of demonstrating how streets that prioritise people’s movement can contribute to an exciting, vibrant place to live work and play.”
