The next Open Streets Day takes place on Sunday 25 November between 09h00 and 14h00 in Bellville, along a section of the iconic Voortrekker Road. The 2018-2019 season kicked off on 28 October in Woodstock and will continue on the last Sunday of each month in summer (with a break in December).

Open Streets Cape Town, the non profit organisation behind the initiative, aims to create shared spaces that help bridge the social and spatial divides in Cape Town, and encourage us all to think differently about how we move around the city.

Open Streets Bellville is supported by local partners, the Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP) and Voortrekker Road Corridor Improvement District (VRCID), and various groups who have been involved in the Open Streets programme since its first appearance in the Bellville area in 2015.

“Open Streets has been a positive platform for the many different communities who inhabit Bellville to come together and share streets as public space” says Abdullahi Ali Hassan, who sits on the advisory council of the GTP.

Councillor Rose Rau, chairperson of Subcouncil 6 says “Bellville is a key development area for the City of Cape Town in general and Voortrekker Road in particular. The Bellville CBD and Voortrekker Road area will reflect significant changes and developments over time which will embrace our current Transit Orientated Development Policy. Open Streets is an exciting way of demonstrating how streets that prioritise people’s movement can contribute to an exciting, vibrant place to live work and play.”

“Open Streets is an opportunity to experience our city differently and reduce the presence of cars for a day. Bellville boasts the busiest taxi rank and second busiest train station in Cape Town and we encourage those joining us in Bellville to take a bus, train or mini-bus taxi. If that’s not an option, consider car-pooling” says Open Streets’s Programme Director Rebecca Campbell

For those who want to cycle to Bellville on the day, there will be a bike bus departing from the City Centre. Please contact Sindile for details sindile@openstreets.co.za

Everyone in Bellville is invited to walk, cycle, skate, play, dance, explore and connect with your neighbours, friends and family.

ROUTE: Voortrekker Road between Durban Road and Robert Sobukwe Road

TIMES: 09h00 – 14h00 (road closure in place from 08h00 – 15h00)
