To build a successful Open Streets programme in Cape Town that more closely resembles the regular Ciclovía phenomenon in Colombia, support from citizens and strong partners is essential.
This is where you come in. We will be hosting an Open Streets Indaba this Thursday. If you have been part of our journey or would like to take a more active role in Open Streets, we would appreciate your input. If you are able to join us kindly ensure to RSVP.
Open Streets, like Ciclovía, has its roots in citizen participation and the collective desire to build a better city. For our programme to develop strong foundations and to advance, we need support across Cape Town.
Evidence in Bogotá, Colombia, where the Ciclovía concept originates from, shows that strong public support results in the programme being able to withstand difficult periods (such as funding cuts and political change).
In Cape Town, we believe it is crucial to have input from residents, so the programme can grow in a way that works for this city.
Open Streets already enjoys support from local groups in the five areas where we have tested our version of the concept. Local government has supported it from the outset and regards it as a programme with great potential that needs grounding in policy.
Public support indicates the extent to which there is interest at a grassroots level, which has served as a proof of concept for the City of Cape Town. It also provides a knowledge base from which to draw new ideas to grow the fold.
If you can’t make it to the indaba, please consider supporting Open Streets in the following ways:
